Beyond A Backdrop: Creating Unforgettable Settings by Breanna Shields #storymakers class notes

What is setting?

Backdrop ~  vague, general, timeless

Examples:
    Pride & Prejudice
    Beauty & The Beast

Integral ~ fully-described, essential, sets tone, often reveals theme

Examples:
    Hunger Games
    Where the Crawdads Sing

Readers expect to SEE what they read and for the story to move

Every choice should have multiple aspects
Think of the setting as your characters habitat
People are equally connected to the environment
        Small town vs. Big city
        Big family vs. Only child

Filter the setting through deep POV
    What does your character notice?
What does your character not notice?

Are their class divisions?
How does it affect the character?
