Dan Wells-How to Scare People

Image
How to scare people through your writing:

Establish normal-Establish a normal day, routine, life and break it. Take familiar and make unfamiliar-Make appliances come to life on their own.Waiting for the other shoe to drop-Show the audience the bomb under the table. Then have a normal conversation for several minutes, making the audience wait for it to explode. That's suspense.Push fear buttons-Know what people are afraid of then throw them in the middle of it.Show the monster-What did you think of the monster in Silence of the Lamb when you first saw him? He looked normal...

Your First 100 Words

Image
I just read an article about how to make your writing shine and now I can't find it. I wanted to give you the link so you could read the actual post ( I think it was from Write To Be Done). I'll do my best to sum it up in my own words.

When you start writing a new article or chapter or story does it flow like you planned or hoped?
Me either.
The best of most dramatic part of what you're writing is usually not in the first paragraph or even the first page. The best is being cuddled n the middle of paragraph eight or ten or eleven.
The biggest problem of opening paragraphs is we write and write and then the good stuff flows.

How do you get a better start? Try this idea:

#1 Take out an old story you've shelved.
#2 Go down about 100 or so words then highlight and copy them.
#3 Delete the words.
Ouch! I know! (Save the highlighted words at the end of the chapter for now to save it.)
Now read your new first chapter. Does the new start change the flow?

Let me know what happened…

LOVE this quote!

“Don’t say you don’t have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Louis Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Da Vinci, and Albert Einstein.”~H. Jackson Brown

All greatness, large or small, begins somewhere. Some with sketches. Others with formulas or radical ideas. The one common denominator is using the your time and never giving up.

LDStorymakers Writers Conference, May 6-7 2011

Image
I'm proud to promote this conference!
It's one of the best I've attended. Last year I registered for at least SEVEN different conferences with the idea that I would find the ones I liked the best. LDStorymakers made the cut big time. The classes are fantastic, the presenters great and I met so many amazing people, including local authors who are kind and willing to help aspiring writers like me.
I've entered the First Chapter contest. While I didn't win I did get comments that helped me make my story better.
One year I attended Boot Camp, met more people and received more help with my story.
Overall, I think this conference is worth your time.
Here is the link for the conference:
LDStorymakers Conference

ALSO! Would you like to win a 30 page critique? Have dinner with a couple of agents and authors? SHOW YOUR LOVE for the LDStorymakers Conference by spreading the word. Blog about it, twitter, FB, grab a button, all to help.
You may now return to your chair and poli…
