Wednesday Writing with 2 Felines

Writing prompt! And cat alert! Our cats are such babies! Seriously, forty-six degrees in the garage is warm for them. They've grown their fur out and are quite cozy. But Trixie, or Little Cat, always ends up scratching at the back door with big kitty eyes. Someone always gives in and opens the door.
Our cats have trained us well.

How well do you know your characters? Here are a few questions to ask about your characters:

Does your character have a will of his/her own?
Can you predict your character's action or next move?
Does your character react differently in different situations?

Can you see your character changing?

Were you able to answer the questions?

Here is an excellent article on fully developed characters.

On a related note, do you have pictures of your characters? Post one! I'd love to meet him or her.

And now for a randomly selected picture of one of my characters.

Wednesday Writing with 2 Felines

Ah! Body language! Can you "read" a person? Have you ever talked to someone only to know they want to be somewhere else? How do you know? Are they looking over their shoulder? Or over yours? Do they check the time or say "yeah, yeah," pretending to listen?
Body language is a fantastic way to show, not tell. And a great way to fill out your character. Have you added body language? Will a reader know what emotions the character is feeling just by the way they stand or wave?
I got this cheat sheet from archtypewriting.com.

Wednesday Writing with 2 Felines

Today, a prompt!

And two pig cats. They knocked the lid off their food and chowed down.

Write 10 potential book titles of books you'd like to write.
That's not too hard, right? Okay. I'll start.
1. The Fair Hand  (I have no idea where that came from).
2. The One Who Listened. (Strange. Guess I'll keep going).
3. Homeward Bound
4. None but the Lonely (What am I doing? Do these all sound like movie titles??)
5. Don't Do Mornings, Will Travel
6. Hop Along, Butch
7. Christmas With Evelyn
8. What You Don't Know Can't Hurt You Right Away
9. Stalking 101 (What?? Creepy!)
10. And Last But Not Least
Haha! That was fun! I'm not sure those are books in my writing closet but they might be fun to explore. After I wrote each title, a storyline came to me. Most were humorous. Who knows? Maybe one of these titles will pop up with my name as the author.

Did you try this exercise? How did you do? Want to share? Let me know in the comments your favorite title and why.

How cats have nothing to do with your writers block

They really don't care about your writing, you know. Cats don't. They don't care about anything except the sunbeam on the carpet they can curl up in or the soft food you feed them or the tickle under the chin.

We have two outdoor cats but occasionally they sneak in (read: the kids let them in). We have them mainly for the mice that love the empty fields around our house. Our cats are excellent mousers and have earned their keep. They usually don't distract me from writing except when one is inside and wants attention. That's when they get put back outside. I do have to admit that pets in general are calming and give a sense of belonging.

I've noticed a number of authors have cats. Their felines show up on Instragram and FB more than the humans. That is distracting. Not the cats. The social media. It's easy to get sucked in. So in an effort to help my fellow writers, I will post something to do with writing every Wednesday. It might be a tip or a writing p…
